Strange Bedfellows

 No, I'm sorry, Baby Sis.
You can't nap with Blackie the Buggie.

Compelling - but that's a little too Wrath of Khan for me.

Hidden Treasure

Poor Bubby has awful seasonal allergies.  His nose is pretty much a fountain from April to June every year.  So this morning after breakfast, I grabbed a warm washcloth to give his face an extra thorough cleaning.  As I was tipping his head back, I caught just a quick glimmer of a reflection off of something way waaay up his nose.

The light must have hit just exactly right.  I am still dumbfounded as to how I saw it at all.  It was tiny and cream-colored.  But there indeed, in the far reaches of his nose hole, was a Lego!  I mean this thing was jammed up there - like sinus height.

J and I brainstormed.  He suggested needlenose pliers.  I went for my tweezers.  And Grandpa sat at the table, gradually working it down, and plugging the opposite nostril while cheering on Bubs to blow - hard.  After several minutes it dislodged and shot out onto Grandpa's shirt.

"Bubs, what on earth?!"

Of course, I wanted to know why he did this in the first place - and when.

"Why did you stick a Lego up your nose?"

His explanation:
"Welllllll, [Baby Sis] and I were playing hide and seek.  We were playing hide the money.  So I hid it in my nose!"

"When did you do that?"

"Naptime."

(I would like to note that this was breakfast time, so there's no telling which nap time he was referring to, or how many days ago that was.)

"Bubs, why didn't you tell me you had something stuck in your nose?"

"Wellllllll, it was just hard to get out.  So I just left it there."

Which led to my next question:

"[Baby Sis], did you hide anything in your nose?"

Baby Sis (shaking her head, no):  "Uh uh."

Oh, boy.

Upon reviewing this picture, I decided I had better conduct a thorough search of her nostrils as well.

Thankfully, I did not find any hidden treasure in there.

Which brings me back to the picture I never got around to posting earlier this week.

Aren't Bubs and Baby Sis the sweetest nap buddies?!

I mean, they're not even stuffing Legos up their noses or anything!

K-Cup O' Joe

Baby Sis brought me coffee in bed this morning!

Wasn't that thoughtful?!
;)

She came pattering into the room in her pj's, with her curly, blonde bedhead and announced proudly, "Here, Mommy!  I have yo' coffee!"

My favorite part was the personal touch.
I mean, who needs a machine thingy to poke a hole in the top when you have a perfectly good set of front teeth to do the trick?!

Thank you, Baby Sis.
It's the best cup of coffee ever!

Candy Caper

Hi, I'm Baby Sis.  I ate the contents of my Easter basket in less than 20 minutes.  I then attended an egg hunt at Grandma and Grandpa's where I collected about 3 dozen more pieces of candy - which I ate one after another for the next 3 hours.  Except I didn't.  Because the bag in my hand is my own candy.  The candy I ate was everyone else's.

The end.

Working from Home

Saturday mornings are my time to get caught up on any business-related matters I wasn't able to finish during the week - usually editing.

J and Biggest Brother go to the skatepark and the other kids veg out at home.  It's the only morning of the week that we don't have school or church, so I don't feel too bad about retreating to my office with a cup of coffee and letting the kids entertain themselves for a couple of hours.

Luckily, they don't have any trouble with that - ha.

Of course, there are interruptions.  The idea that you can actually work while working from home with small children is hilarious.  But for the most part, I just listen to make sure the sounds I'm hearing don't necessitate intervention.

This particular morning, I had had several requests for help with bathing suits but was assured there would be no actual water involved, so I straightened straps and sent them on their way.  Not long after, I began hearing indistinct chatter and giggles punctuated by repeated, loud thuds.

It didn't immediately warrant an investigation.  The sounds were happy, and the overall noise level was about a 6 on a scale of 1-10.

If 1 is total silence and 10 is uproarious laughter - both of which indicate they are definitely doing something they shouldn't be - the middle of the road is a pretty safe place to be.

I was curious, however.

Upon coming downstairs, I didn't find anything too out of the ordinary.  Though this did seem like a rather odd way to watch cartoons.
That luminous rectangle on the wall was only a momentary distraction, however.  They were actually all lined up to take turns jumping off of the armrest "diving board" into Bubby's blue blanket "swimming pool."

That's a cannonball.

I have to give them props for imagination.  And they didn't make a mess - so double bonus there.

(I should also give a shoutout to our sweet, old dog, who is by now so unperturbed by their antics that she can relax absolutely anywhere.)

At one point, someone did land poorly and took a set of knees to the teeth.  So they decided they should probably be more careful . . .

That outta do it.
I mean - safety first!

Carry on!

~

And I did actually get a little bit of work done - huzzah!

Sweet Sentiments

Baby Sis is always full of toddler philosophy when I'm tucking her into bed at night.  It's probably a stalling tactic, but I always like hearing what she has to say.

I ask her, "Whaddaya know, Jo?"

Last night she told me she has two grandmas and two grandpas.  They wear glasses.  The store has people with glasses - and milk, orange juice, Powerade, cheese, and broccoli.

She makes sure to comment on whether or not the sun is awake or asleep.
(We used that illustration as a way to teach her how not to get up before dawn.)
Consequently, she is not at all on board with going to bed while the sun is still awake.
Bubby has long referred to naptime as "sunny bedtime."  So I've started addressing it as such to ease the protest.

Tonight as I was tucking her in, she said something that sounded like, "Budsr in bed."
She kept repeating it because I wasn't quite understanding.

"Brother's in bed?"
(no)

 "Birds in your bed?"
(no)

 "Brother?"
(no)

"Birds?"
(Yes, that was it.)

"What about the birds?"

"Turn on," she said.

She has a mobile of bird chimes from our dear, great aunt that hangs above her bed.  It's not unusual for her to ask me to chime them, so I thought that's what she meant.

"Turn on these birds?" I asked.

"No, outside."

"You want me to turn on the outside birds?"

"Yes," she replied, "I want to see the sky."

~

So tonight in my toddler philosophy class I learned:

1. She judges time not only by the sun being awake but also the birds - and she can "see" the sky during the day.

2.  She thinks that I have the ability to turn night into morning - which is awfully, awfully sweet.

"Goodnight, Baby Girl."
I look forward to hearing what you know again tomorrow.
